Bellworts have already reached their full size. The bulky bunches of Jack-in-the-Pulpit seeds long ago toppled over to the ground and are now becoming a shiny vermillion. The False Solomon’s seal are bent over with big bunches of red specked berries, and the twin-berries of the True variety are already turned a whitish blue.
Our arbor is burdened heavily with grapes and on that account is a very satisfying sight. The pink ones are just beginning to turn, and already taste sweet. Vern and Fred Rich were down the alley talking noisily. Fred espied our grapes but failed to notice me. Telling Vern he was going to sample them an argument ensued as to whether they were ripe or not and the out-come was that Fred came boldly over to see for himself. As he was about to take a bunch, I remarked, intending to settle the argument,
“They’re just beginning to turn.”
