long the lane. It finally led an to an open pasture,down which walked till I came to a field of tall corn, that extended down to the orchard. I entered it, and walked down between two rows, knowing my approach could not now be detected from the house. Arriving at the orchard fence I sprawled over. Some pigs grunted noisily at my entrance but I paid no attention to them. My trouble however was all for naught - not one mushroom did I find.
For a second time I retraced my steps down the lane and coming to the pasture again I crossed it,and skirting the edge of a dark woods, I came upon another cornfield. Here I caught sight of a hawk being tormented by a kingbird. There is nothing, perhaps that excites so much admiration in the bird world, as the kingbird who will harass a bird many times its size, and drive it away.
