In the spring, when this bird is singing madly because he is stirred by the passion of love, we enjoy his song the most for he strikes in us a sympathetic chord, which renders his melody most sweet. The feeling inspired by his song in late summer while not so sweet an emotion as in the spring, is more spiritual for now, when passion for him is done, he must be singing only to the sky and the bright sun.
While climbing the fence I scared up a mourning dove which flew silently out of sight. In the dried-up bed of a creek here I saw a glorious spike of cardinal flower in full bloom.
