For awhile I sat there lazily. Two crows flew up and away cawing noisily. Daddy-long-legs were plentiful here. I always associate them with picking elderberries for on such trips when we we’d sit down to chuck the berries, they seemed to corn from out of nothing to clamber awkwardly over our person and in the baskets. And then we’d catch them and holdingthem up, mindful of the old belief, say “Tell me where the cows are.” They would point in some direction, and even if there were no cows visible in that direction still we, being of a liberal mind,would remark that there would be cows in that direction if we only went far enough and with that let the frightened creatures go.
