walking. At the chipmunk’shiding place,I just caught a glympse of them as they darted into the recesses of the trash pile. I went over and kicked at the pile,but with no results. The desire to go at it and tear it to pieces grew strong within me, but I fought down the feeling and went on. At this point a broad path leads up to the road. Up this I went. In a tree overhead were a nut hatch and a black and white creeper, busily searching for food as unconcernedly as tho I were a wile away. Oft times they came creeping down on limbs just above me, showering me with bits of rotten wood. Presently a male cardinal flew in a tree overhead, followed by a female. At sight of me he dived down into some brush into the hollow below. From somewhere appeared another female, who followed the male. The first one remained overhead and did not seem the least concerned about the matter.
I soon came out on the roadway again. Owing to some trick of the wind I could not hear the moaning of the telephone wires. I could hear however, the wind rustling thru leafy beeches that ming1ed with the murmur of the brook and the result was charming. Where the road
