Cabin Beech is a kindly old beechen tree that arises from the point of land between the two small hollows that unite to form Cabin-Beech Hollow. In its top-most branches some adventurous person or persons have erected a rude little shanty, which is reached by a roughly constructed ladder. Going up the ladder, you must draw yourself up at the start by the strength of your wrists because a few rungs have succumbed to the hard usage exacted of them. You go very carefully as an ominous swaying prohibits hurry. Coming to the top you find a rude plat-form in front of the door-way, we may call it a porch. This has a primitive¶looking railing around it, made of dead branches. If you are tall, you must bend double to get in the door; once inside you may stand erect. As to its size,I dare say I could lie down in it either way and I am upwards of twice a yard. In the south and west walls there are rude windows where one may look out over the country. The whole is loosely constructed of old boards and would prove a poor shelter in a heavy rain. Yet it has a certain charm – all such places have. Its walls are profusely decorated with rude cut initials. This shows the overpowering instinct of humans to leave records behind them.
