that new sound inspires, I began searching for the bird with my eye. Repeatedly he sent his call thru the woods and presently I saw him high up on the limb of a tree. I was a kind of woodpecker, but the poor light deceived me as to his real class. My brief glimpse of him before he flew showed a red head and a white body I watched him and saw him alight in a maple at the edge of the woods. Carefully I followed, making every movement as slow and unsuspicious as possible. He did not seem much disturbed at my approach, but true to his kind, kept out of sight on the opposite side of the limb. I became motionless and waited. Such inaction no doubt was very distrustful to him, for in a few moments he came around on the other side to look. A good look (on my part) at his black and white back, and wings proved him to be a red-headed woodpecker. I wondered at my stupidity in not recognizing him instantly, but perhaps it was the unexpectedness of seeing one so early in the season. I took a step - and up he flew with his rattling clatter, alighting in a tree not far off, where he gave a preliminary tap with his beak and straightening up in a most business like manner, he seemed to say: “There now! What do you think of that?”
