followed as unexpectedly by sunshine. By noon the snow of the morning had become slush, and by afternoon the slush had become water. Towards evening, the wind veered around the west, and dark clouds, with dashing rain intermingled with bright sunshine. Finally a dark mass of clouds came rapidly on. How I longed to be out to watch it! In the office I could only see the effects of it. The air became dark as night, and continued so until night really came. When we came out from work, it was raining hard, but a little later, it began to turn to snow. Now, as I write, the wind is roaring madly.

To-day is Washington’s Birthday, but my only impression of the fact was that it was not a holiday for me. This is the way it is generally coming to be regarded – a cause for a holiday, not a cause for recalling the greatness of the man. One might as well say Birthington’s Washday, and no doubt that means as much to some as the correct and more respectful form.
