coming down the hall. Looking up I saw Mr. Bustard, who called Ray out in the hall and commenced talking to him. Without any particular reason I idly watched them. Soon both came in the room; Ray went to the mail desk and I could see he took out the book he keeps our time in. After this they talked awhile longer. Paul then came over to me and said: (he had stood there while they were talking)
“I bet you’re going to get a job in the Cost Department”
Afraid even to think about it I asked why.
“Because they’re talking about you”
“What did they say”
“I couldn’t tell – they talked in such low tones. But he said once “What time does he come to work in the morning”
Then he went away leaving me at a loss to know what to think. Presently Mr. Bustard left and a few moments later Ray motioned for me to come out in the stock room. I could easily guess what it was for.
“Charlie” he said very seriously “I’m going to fire
