bushes and saplings, and near the Bridge, the place is over run with bushes. Towards these I now went. As I came up a cardinal flew up and announced my arrival with his angry “Cht-Cht.” A loud rattling tap attracted my attention next, which I found to be a downy woodpecker hunting food in ragweed stalks. Hanging down from a tree I found the cocoon of the cecropia moth which I broke off.
From Covered Bridge I started my return. A yellow pallor now seemed to spread over the western sky, and seemed to make the whole country glow faintly. When I came to the end of Pinehollow I cut up over the hills and made my way thru Post’s. Again the sky became a deep grey over in the west and while it was lighter over in the east, and the effect was wierd.
The snow started about supper-time. I regret to say that I didn’t go out to see it, but knew it was snowing by the snow on Louise’s coat when she came in.
