necktie, when Joe, Edna, Hattie, Bill and Bernice came along. Whilethey scolded at my slowness, I put on the finishing touches and fled out doors. In a few moments we came trooping to Jim’s; he came forth and greeted us hilariously. Vesta and Roy were already there, and Wilbur Thomas and a Miss Layden, from Oberlin. We were all introduced and “sat around”and talked awhile. Then supper was announced.
This was a delightful affair, but proved disastrous for me. Chicken was the main part and we certainly enjoyed ourselves. Jim, Miss Layden and Wilbur talked of Oberlin, Joe, and Bill talked of our play we gave up at the Y’s, while Bernice and I, who sat next to each other, cautioned each other not to eat too much, and warned Bill against getting Nervous. Vesta was silent and repelled all advances by mono-syllabic replies. The two future actors, Bernice and Bill, kept worrying about the time. Miss Richards had told them to be down at seven sharp and they wanted to be punctual Finally, at half-past seven after eating ice-cream and Nabisco wafers, we three jumped up and hurried off. Long before we reached the opera-house I was sick on account of jumping up too soon after eating.
