fifth, those who would think about it; sixth, those who were too busy; seventh, those who didn’t care for any; eighth who wanted me to come around Monday; ninth and least, those who wanted them on the spot; and tenth, the violent kind.
The last was a very interesting kind. They are ferocious wild animals, “tite-wads” and bugbears, and when you heard them in their dens they show their teeth in a very impolite manner. I only encountered one of these; it was towards the end of the campaign, and I went up a stairs hopefully and entered an office. A great shaggy monster bore down upon me and looked “what do you want?” at me. I made my solicitation very sweetly, to which he, turning on his heel replied “aw h _ _ l, no.” I fled - laughing.
At first I only received a few scattered promises, but finally I met one of the ninth class – those who wanted them right away. It was Prudence. I never expected her to buy any. I saw her coming and waving my tickets at her I told her that, as she hadn’t showed she had to buy tickets. She immediately bought three fifties! The only other one of this kind was Mr. Floding, who bought two.
