didn’t believe this of course but he came pretty near falling off. (almost as good) After we had watched awhile, we went out Ellsworth with Gibby, who came along just then, to Fourth where he went on with some girls who came along just then, while we went home.[i]
Wednesday March 22, 1911
This morning as it was very warm and nice I went without my overcoat. It was fine weather, altho the wind, which was coming from the south, was blowing up misty clouds that now hung close to the earth threatening rain. In school as I looked out of the windows, I saw that the clouds were getting darker and lower, and were hurrying across the sky; and soon tin and slate roofs began to get shiny and reflect the light in their surface; it was some moments before I realized it was raining. There was no wind now; trees were quite motionless. I could not see the rain come down nor hear it.
At noon when we came out of school Bill suggested running straight up Fourth St, and so we started off with all our strength, over the shining and slippery walks, with the rain straight in outfaces. Long before we got to our house, both of us were tired, but neither would stop running first, and besides it was raining harder now.
