the road, which I did until I came to the Ellsworth Road. Here I thought I had met my Muddyloo, for I was on the wrong side of the road! To make it worse, I was at some crossroad and so would have to cross two roads. Luckily there were several rocks lying around which I threw in the mud and on them I crossed to the other side. Here I found some long boards on which I crossed the other road, and again hurried on my way, until I came to a pile of large beams having been placed there probably for the construction of a barn on the other side of the road, where all was confusion with piles of logs and planks.
As I was enjoying the songs of bluebirds and song-sparrows I spied two figures coming across a field straight toward me. I waved and they waved back. Of course it was the Old Guard and the General. When they reached the road, they sat down on a pile of boards while I amused myself by pulling off strips of birch-bark from logs, breaking it up into squares and throwing them at the two ronyons on the other side. They soon tired of this, so they put some boards across the road and came across. The rest of the way in was but a long succession of
