On we went down the shore, keeping up an incessant throwing and shouting, and ever launching new ships. Soon Bill and I became tired, but King thereupon launched a whole fleet. This was too much for us. We at once attacked, it, altho it was terribly dangerous now, for we had made a rule of 1911 - in imitation of the Rule of 1756 - that Opposing parties could splash each other to to their heart’s content. We all got a goodly share of this, but I was incapacitated early in the struggle by getting hit squarely in the eye by a swinging branch. It was a long time before I could open my eyes, and the one hurts yet. Bill and King seemed to be going at it, judging from the shouts of triumph, laughter and splashes of water which generally found their way to Bill.
At about the place where I hurt my eye, we decided to leave the creek and strike southward. At a hill, King, due to Bill’s ingenuity, suddenly became the “Old Guard”, and I “Abercrombie”, while he was “General Washington.” Our duty it was to keep King from coming up the hill. Here
