came in, then later Edith and Jim came down. After awhile Ethel and Emily Howell come in. We sat around and talk; I could see no way of breaking away to go to church. Finally, I went out and looked at the clock: It registered half-past eight. As it was now too late to go to church, we all assembled around the dining room table and improvised a game of eight-handed Five-hundred and with this game to amuse us, the evening slipped away. Bill and I were on the same side and sat together, so we usually put our hands to-gether. Altogether this has been an enjoyable Christmas, I think. There is only one more thing that I can say and that is, someone had turned the clock on an hour. How providential! But for that we might have been sweltering in a church instead of sweltering around a game of cards.[i]
Tuesday Dec. 27
This morning I became virtuous and started my composition that I have to write for German. But it was hard to keep my mind fixed on it and I was glad when King called up, asking me to get Bill + Jim and come out in the afternoon to play cards. A little later Mrs. Smith called up and invited us to a Kabal supper Harold was giving this evening.
We all went out to King and played cards to our hearts
