been the act of a gentleman to do so, but then we never had any encouragement – she barely ever speaks to a fellow when she meets him, and we didn’t feel like trotting out after her. Besides she wouldn’t. –
Presently King came along. King used to go with her and once we immediately impressed it upon him that it was his duty to see her home and he started after her. When our other friends, - bud and rest – had got up the street a little ways Naomi Hyland was ronyon enough to turn around, - almost crying I guess – and say:
“You boys certainly had little respect for the Senior class”
This flattened us out and, choking with laughter, we started homeward. Up on Garfield we met King!
“Wouldn’t she have you?” one of us asked him
“Oh she said she wasn’t afraid” he stammered in reply.
I’ll bet his turn-down was worse than that. But we all, King included, felt more respect for her, for having done so.
At High St, our dividing point, we paused a while to joke over the “respect” we should have had.
“I wonder what Merle will think” I remarked laughingly.
“I’ll find out” replied Zufall. He took off his stiff hat
