We crossed the road a little to the north of their (Richard’s) house and sneaked along in their side-yard. As we walked over the frozen ground and leaves, a crunch crunch would resound with each step. At least they resounded according to our notions. Suddenly a most horrible baying broke in upon our startled senses. So Carey’s, next-door neighbors to Richards, had a dog too. Such piteous wails and goans as that hound did give forth. Then followed Richards dog with more yelps and
