“Say Fred” I cried “go down and rake up the furnace and do all the banging you can. May be they’ll take the hint”
“And maybe they won’t” added Bill “don’t forget to bang” he called after Fred as he started down.
A moment later, sounds like the clashing of arms in a battle came up to our ears. I never heard such banging, scraping shaking + shoveling in all my life. First he would shake the ashes down, then bang the door shut and shovel a lot of coal and then bang down the shovel and then began all over again.
Of course it didn’t have any effect, except that Frances said after wards that he did more banging than she thought was necessary! And then laughed when we explained
