When we laid the matter before him, telling how badly we would like to get the colors down, Mr. Cook, not yet without any memory of his boyhood, consented, but remarking:
“Go ahead if you can, but I don’t want to know anything about. Better wait awhile, for there goes Carlisle (the mayor) into his office with a young lady”
With much respect for our chief, Bill and I again descended to the street. Our first thing was to look up Astry and get his hammer. This we accomplished with no difficulty, for Astry was looking for us. Stationing Astry across the street in case of trouble, after waiting a while we again ascended to the Mayor’s office, now empty.
