fearing the approach of some official, we found what appeared to be a door leading to the tower.  Opening it we proceeded up the steep stairway and found ourselves in a musty, dusty room just below the clock-works.  We were forced to move as quietly is possible, for in the courtroom just below some kind of business was being transacted.  We discovered a little stair, up which we crept.  At the top we found a door and opening it, found ourselves in among the clock-works.  The sight of the hardly moving wheels and curious other parts startled us for a moment, but we looked around to see if we can see some way of getting to the tower.  Seeing none we came down again.  I don’t know what we would
