and Fred Stiffer seemed willing enough to have us put it up, but suggested that, instead of taking in on the roof, we hang it from a window in the top story.  As beggars are never choosers (if they could sense), we readily agreed to this.  And the plan later proved to bettle than ours.
     Winding our way among the various stairways we finally reached the top- story, after we had rescued the pole from the roof.  Fastening the pennant on the pole, we soon had it fluttering out of the window.  Jubilantly we hurried down to see both how it looked and what effect it would have on our enemies.  After the first few moments of admiration, two serious defects presented themselves
