Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967)

was composed of roast beef + gravy mashed potatoes, peas, pic-a-lillie, cheese, jelly, brown and white bread, coffee and for dessert, pumpkin pie, and a dish composed of cranberries, puffed apple-sauce and whipped cream, with cake and a lot of talk and laughter besides.

After supper we adjourned to the parlor, where we talked about school, running down to our lessons, our school-teachers and the football fellows, a common diversion with us.

Then Joe had to go home and the rest of us played checkers.  Bud brought out his checkerboard and managed to find one in the neighborhood.  We had to take turns at playing, the one losing giving up his place.
