This map, centered on Burchfield’s home town of Salem, depicts the terrain he explored for subjects. New Albany, in the upper right quadrant, is one of places he frequented. Nostalgia and memories made him revisit favorite subjects many years after leaving the area, such as The Visit (ca. 1920-24), which features the lonely, haunting “Pine Knot House,” discovered in 1917. Look for where he circled the nearby location of the covered bridge on Little Beaver Creek which inspired Fireflies and Lightning (1964-65) based on an unforgettable 1915 memory.--Nancy Weekly
