76. peace was overwhelming –
There is a lot of talk, now of the artist, “filling a need,” of doing things to order, rather than creating the things that come from within him regardless of their immediate use – But what a comfort it is to reflect upon Beethoven, who created the things he did because he could not help himself. Think of the audacity of asking four men to perform as personal a thing at (sic) his F Minor Quartet, Opus 95 – of asking a whole body of musicians to execute his 7th Symphony! It is the world who should do things to order for us, who should fill our needs.
I will win through – even if my friends are cooling off, I will go on alone, I will come thru without them. Otherwise I am not a man.
