41. Dissipointed Man” (sic) (“The Journal of a Disappointed Man: An Intimate Edwardian Diary” by W.N.P. Barbellion) which gives me a thrill. It is full of tragedy and beauty. He reminds me sometimes of myself, and that he was born only four years before I was, brings him nearer. I approach each page somewhat apprehensively, fearing that perhaps it is too much to expect it to continue to be so fine; however, my fears always more groundless.

                   September 5, 1934 –

     A day of puttering at this and that, unable to so any one thing for long at a time: looking at pictures, shellacking frames, trying pictures in half-finished frames, and wandering in the garden. Got the “Hollows” picture and the “Shed in Swamp” and studied them. For the first time since their near-completion, I was able to enjoy them frankly, and feel that
