39. Plenitude and well-being about it; the earth is a bountiful place, full of rich treasures, in crops and live-stock. That the situation is otherwise, is humanity’s fault.
From Springville on, my senses were dulled to impressions, I had seen as much as I could grasp. So I set myself to getting home as swiftly as possible, and still be safe.
September 3, 1934 –
All of us to see H. Lloyd “Catspaw” (sic) (“The Cat’s Paw”) – afterwards when we were getting in the car, I thought I would start it meantime, but when I released the clutch, the car slid forward suddenly, catching our open front door on the adjoining machine. We all got excited & did the wrong things, some of the children screamed, and by the time we got extricated (albeit with little damage done) all our nerves were raw. Later on, I figured out that the attendant had put the car in gear to hold it in place instead of putting on the emergency brake, a procedure which seemed to me, unnecessary.
Saw in the new Geographic today that Alaska’s flag is a blue field containing the Ursa Major and the Pole Star – a fine conception, which started a
