32. going the same route I used to take – some spots were entirely changed, and others were just the same as I remembered them. I enjoyed the walk, but it was a foolish, a dangerous thing to do. But now that I am up here again, my memory of all of the old haunts is the same as the the mental picture of all my old haunts is the same as they were of old.
How I would have enjoyed talking Mother and Frances for a ride in the car.
August 21 – 24, 1934 –
Drive to Beech Creek to work on big barn picture – stayed at Schwarz’s, and renewed by liking and aspect for Mrs. Schwarz. The boy is marries, and besides his wife, a grand-daughter was there. I lack the faculty of putting people at their ease, or of being at my ease. At all meals there was a subtle constraint. I tried to think of ways to let down the bars, but could not.
I went to see Tom Cook, but regretted it. I had forgotten he was so incredibly dirty, and talked so much – a sort of rambling hodge-podge of pseudo-philosophic platitudes, and historical allusions all garbled together. I had to sit in a chair by the couch, on which
