East towards Brown Rd – work on water-color of tower house begun a couple of years ago – work till noon when sun comes too far around
Northward across fields to swampy grove of pines and diciduous [sic] trees – lunch under a big pine tree in the warm misty sun – a rarely beautiful day, warm and drowsy – a flicker digging up a worm not far away.
After lunch explore westward thru little groves and swamps. Here & there hepaticas & spring – beauties - a stump richly topped with green moss-
Find a spot in a grove, by a pond that seemed the embodiment of the locale of my “Hermitage in Spring” – tall slender beeches with “personalities” – the air filled with the hum of bees at maple blossoms overhead – pools here & there covered with a barely discernible scum – the magic of the hum overwhelmed me – I longed to stay, but did not , fearing to “wear out” the mood of the place, for I had resolved to bring my painting here to work on the spot – rain clouds gathering in the southwest –
