Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift of Carol and John Kociela in honor of Jeffrey Thier, 2019
In 1877, Lockport native Frank Crawford Penfold went to Paris with Burr Halliday Nicholls and studied at the atelier of Carolus-Duran and, later, at the Académie Julian. Both Penfold and Nicholls were active in an artists’ colony at Pont-Aven in the Brittany region of France, making it an enclave for American artists and tourists that is still promoted today. Penfold taught and painted in Pont-Aven as well as in Buffalo, returning occasionally and exhibiting both in Europe and the U.S. He was a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists and was elected president in 1896. An extensive chronology by Mark Strong is posted at https://www.meibohmfinearts.com/artists/details/55.
This painting was exhibited in From the Wealth of Transport: Raphael Beck, Frank Penfold and Burr Nicholls, presented at the Burchfield Penney Art Center from July 12 through September 29, 2019.
