Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift of Frederic K. and Marie Houston, 2017
Even in this light-hearted drawing of an imaginary architectural structure perhaps needing restoration, on can see how Fred Houston was recognized as one of Buffalo’s most prominent architects. Colleagues Michael Hamilton, Frederic Houston, and Theodore Lownie founded Hamilton Houston Lownie Architects (later known simply as HHL Architects) in 1969. Their practice extended across continents, developing teams that oversaw new construction as well as renovation of prized buildings for corporate and residential purposes, cultural institutions, schools, and healthcare. Fred and Marie Houston have supported architectural exhibitions at The Center, including Through These Gates: Buffalo’s First African American Architect, John E. Brent, presented in 2015.
