Buffalo News art critic Colin Dabkowski wrote: “Taylor paints with flashe (a vinyl-based matte-finish paint), clay, water and sometimes tempera. In many works, he applies it with his fingers, which generates crackled, fragile-looking strokes…They look vulnerable, as if they might fall off at any moment.” This fragility represents the African American experience through abstract forms. The lines, grids, and bands of compartmentalized monochromatic color might be seen as a coded urban map. Rodney Taylor describes his paintings as “the unbearable burden of the black and white... grey.” — NW
