About this series, Evan Hawkins wrote: “This is a new series of drawings on aluminum that combines the elements of metal and stone. The imagery includes contemporary buildings and objects that rest upon foundations, tombs and monolithic structures of ancient cultures throughout the world. The materials used to create the work are aluminum and graphite which symbolize the content.”
Reactions exhibition labels for adults and youths:
History surrounds us in our everyday lives. However, the world is constantly changing around us. It is easy to forget the past and what we can learn from it. The city Evan Hawkins depicted on a sarcophagus portrays the message that the new is built on the remains of the old. Consider how our current civilization interacts with the past and think about how the future might be impacted by us. What control do we have in the present?
Hey Kids:
Take a moment and think about the people who built the city that you live in. What do you think it was like? Now, think about the people who lived in your region before your city developed. Now, think about this in terms of the whole world. Who lived here hundreds, thousands, or millions of years ago? New things constantly come into our lives and we often forget about the old. Think about what you can learn from the past and how you can use it for a better future.
