Anthony Bannon provided some background history about this photograph:
"It was given to me by Ed Wozniak when I left the BAC directorship in 1996. Wozniak had purchased it from Vern Stein, who had acquired it from Nancy Tobin-Willig, who rescued it from intended disposal by the Courier-Express when it closed. Tobin-Willig told Bannon that she believed this to be a self-portrait. The stick Porterfield holds was given to him when he was inducted into the Seneca Nation and given a Seneca name. The stick appears in other photographs that are yet to be found."
