This photograph was shown in the solo exhibition, Alice O’Malley: Community of Elsewheres, presented in New York in 2007 and at the Nina Freudenheim Gallery in September 2008. The image comes from a body of work Alice O'Malley produced between 2001 and 2008 that documents people from New York’s East Village and Lower East Side whom she describes as “those who inhabit the peripheries,” including transgender friends and acquaintances, and people who choose non-traditional lifestyles. Fellow photographer Justine Kurland showed off her pregnancy as a virtual superwoman by wearing just a cape and boots. Kurland created a series of large-format photographs of nude mothers and their children in vast idyllic landscapes conjuring the aesthetics of 19th-century transcendental and luminist painters.
