Ike is part of a series of works inspired by the aftermath of devastating hurricanes, such as Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Ike (2008). According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), “Ike was a long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that caused extensive damage and many deaths across portions of the Caribbean and along the coasts of Texas and Louisiana.” As an inventive recycler of materials, Jozef Bajus used roof shingles he collected to create a model of the destructive waves of the storm surge that caused extensive damage across parts of the northwestern Gulf States.
