Clara E. Sipprell (1885-1975)

Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was an extraordinarily multi-talented person. He earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Strasbourg, having written his dissertation on the religious philosophy of Kant. He was a musician, musicologist, and wrote a biography of Bach. With his M.D. degree, he served as a medical missionary and surgeon in French Equatorial Africa, founded a hospital at Lambaréné in 1913, but a few years later he and his wife became prisoners of war. He was to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for 1952, but it was withheld that year and given to him in 1953. A true humanitarian, he started a leprosarium at Lambaréné with the prize funds.
