Carrianne Hendrickson (b. 1974)

In Carianne Hendrickson’s work, we are invited into a world where dreams and metaphor come to life. Working exclusively in ceramics, Hendrickson creates tableaux featuring characters of an imaginary world. These narratives are rarely of the happy kind—they dig deeper into fears and the complexity of relationships.
Sometimes Hendrickson’s sculptures appear more like craft, in the tradition of functional, decorative objects. Her work sometimes doubles as teapots and piggy banks. In most instances, she is not creating vessels but sculptures, which illustrate stories and metaphors. This is not photorealism, nor can it be classified as cartoon. She has a delicate way of offsetting dark, dreary subject matter with a style that might normally be associated with innocence.
