Gary L. Nickard (b. 1954)

Gary Nickard stated: "I made it back in 1980-81 when I was printing a bunch of Clawson negatives for the UB Anthropology Department. It is printed from one of his nitrocellulose negatives on modern Agfa Portriga paper (hence the warm tone); as for me signing it, I can no longer recall my intention, I certainly wouldn’t sign it today - back then I was a rabid postmodernist of the Sherrie Levine school so in that spirit let's label it as an appropriation in the manner Levine would: By Gary Nickard after H. Phelps Clawson. That is sure to piss of more than a few folks - so be it ;)

H. Phelps Clawson was an archeologist and curator of Anthropology at the Buffalo Museum of Science.
