In her artwork, Patricia Carter challenges racial and gender stereotypes, particularly African American women nannies, cleaners, and domestic workers at the service of racist Caucasian employers. These women are among those who struggled for Civil Rights in the segregated South, beginning with the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955-56. Carter’s untitled drawings illustrate society’s oppressive history—the white supremacists around whom the caretaker must navigate—and yet the responsible woman performs her duties compassionately.
