In 1997, Arnold Newman told Nancy Weekly that this was one of the very first portraits he had ever done, a “so called ‘experiment’ in portraiture, which I did in the fall of 1941 when I came to New York to see if I could ‘make good’.” According to his “Sitting Book,” Burchfield was first, Raphael Soyer was second, and Reginal Marsh was third.
