In the act of reflection one can see oneself. Reflection allows us to examine ourselves and think carefully about who we are and what we stand for. For Burchfield, actual reflections would at times inspire personal reflection. On October 14, 1925, with a growing family and consuming job at the M.H. Birge, he wrote the following:
I went out to wait for the bus as the cool spicy breeze came up from the water reflecting the glaring white sun, a strange peace came over me...
