Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967)

In July 1928, Edward Hopper wrote a glowing profile, “Charles Burchfield: American,” for Arts magazine. He observed, “The work of Charles Burchfield is most decidedly founded, not on art, but on life, and the life that he knows and loves best. From what is to the mediocre artist and unseeing layman the boredom of everyday existence in a provincial community, he has extracted a quality that we may call poetic, romantic, lyric, or what you will.” From June 15, 1922 until April 1925, Charles, Bertha, Mary Alice and Martha Burchfield lived near this site in an apartment at 459 Franklin Street.
