False front buildings fascinated Burchfield during walking trips through small towns in eastern Ohio. His watercolors visually convey an American way of life familiar through his own experiences and chronicled in literature by his contemporaries. He was especially fond of Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, published in 1919. Critics were quick to notice the similarities in their work, dubbing Burchfield, "the Sherwood Anderson artist." - Nancy Weekly, 2002
