Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift of Charles Rand Penney, 1994
For his artistic talents while he served in the U.S. Army stationed in Jackson, South Carolina, Burchfield was part of the Camouflage Division. He was also allowed to go into the surrounding civilian area, where he found this subject, also known as Well and Negro Cabin. It may have made him homesick for the small town experiences he left back in Salem, Ohio, after he was drafted. —NW
