Donna Fierle (b. 1951)

In 1992, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo presented The Abortion Project. This exhibition, curated by Chrysanne Stathacos and Sara Kellner, included the work of nationally celebrated and local artists on the highly politicized subject of women’s reproductive rights.  Donna Fierle’s work literally provided a neutral ground upon which advocates of both sides of the issue could express their views. One panel of the diptych was reserved for women’s responses and the other panel was for men. Open participation by the exhibition’s visitors was crucial to the work’s success. —NW
