In addition to being an artist, Todd Chalk has also taught painting privately and at Erie Community College and the University at Buffalo. Landscape has been a source for subject matter that she conveys through fluidity, texture, color selection, and transparency. Chalk lived in California in 1955 near the edge of the Mojave Desert. Her trip to Puerto Rico and the Bahamas around 1974 inspired a series of works titled Sun, Sea and Sand. One can easily imagine Caribbean colors, the sun’s warmth, the smell of salty ocean air, and the feel of finely grained sand without even looking at her title. (NW)
