U. S. Army soldiers wearing dress summer uniforms, appear to be so distracted while off duty that they do not notice the cultural riches where they are stationed, such as the remarkable cathedral behind them. Artist Harvey Breverman, who served in Korea first as a radio operator and later in Special Services, said that the men may look a little tipsy, their attenuated features paying homage to the expressive figures painted by El Greco. He noted that the good conduct medal appears on the opposite side of where it should be worn. Breverman had shifted from abstraction to figuration around 1961, when he moved to Buffalo.
