One of the co-founders in the 1970’s of Buffalo’s alternative artist space, Hallwalls, Charles Clough is now a respected artist working in New York City. His work features a strong abstract expressionist influence, revealed in the heavy and visceral layering of paint. Here abstracted forms combined with hidden emotional faces are reminiscent of the works of Willem de Kooning. Clough is particularly concerned with capturing a sense of touch in his painting, which in this work is visible in the use of actual hands-on finger painting. —Joan Vita Marotta, 2002
