Portraitist Eugene Speicher, who was born in Buffalo, painted Jean Bellows several times. He captures the teenager’s sullen look as she grows impatient with posing immobile for extended periods of time. She was the daughter of painter George Bellows. The pose and costumed female subject have a striking resemblance to Woman in a Green Hat (Madame Cézanne) (1894-95) by the Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. [Woman in a Green Hat (Madame Cézanne) 1894-95, Oil on canvas, 100.2 x 81.2 cm (39 1/2 x 32 in); The Barnes Foundation, Merion, Pennsylvania]
